Running Slackware 1.1.2 Under Qemu

The last version of Slackware to use a pre-1.0 kernel.

Qemu Emulated Devices

KVM acceleration works well and the extra speed of hardware virtualisation is welcome. The emulated vga device should be cirrus, and the newest emulated network adapter that I can get to work is ne2k_isa. I had to build a custom kernel to get the network card to work, although there is a kernel that includes the driver for this card, it didn't work and I think it's due to it not playing nicely with other drivers in the kernel. My config file can be found here and the binary here (md5).

Network Configuration

Slackware 1.1.2 doesn't have a DHCP client, so IP addresses should be configured manually. The defaults with user mode networking in Qemu are 10.0.2.15 for the local machine, the gateway is 10.0.2.2 and the nameserver is 10.0.2.3

XFree86 Configuration

The driver should be clgd5428 (it's for an earlier Cirrus Logic adapter than the emulated one, but the driver works). A copy of my Xconfig can be found here.

On The Internet

No web browser at all, but email clients and newsreaders are provided. I can't even get the ftp client to work with modern servers.

Slackware 1.1.2 login screen

fvwm still the same :-)

The FTP client partly works

And telnet works, but with the same DNS restrictions as we've already seen.

Useful info for getting online with contemporary hardware :-)

Same bug on exiting X as seen in Slackware 2.0.1
